Complex Care on the Coast: How We Support Adults with Higher Needs at Home

Updated: Jul 22

Not every adult with a disability needs clinical-level care. However, many individuals on the Sunshine Coast face complex challenges that extend beyond basic drop-in support. These individuals deserve a provider who truly understands their needs.

At Sunshine Family Support, we don’t wear lab coats or act as medical professionals. Instead, we offer reliable and structured support for adults who:

  • Have mental health challenges, trauma backgrounds, or dual diagnoses

  • Require longer shifts or daily support

  • Need assistance with routines, communication, regulation, or safety

  • Depend on workers who can follow specific instructions and provide consistent care

Here’s how we define “complex care” and how we help adults with higher needs thrive at home.

What Does “Complex” Really Mean?

The term "complex" is used frequently, but for us, it signifies a thoughtful and consistent approach to support. Here are some examples of what complexity entails:

  • Psychosocial disability and recovery-focused support

  • Multiple diagnoses or behavioral challenges

  • Clients who have faced service breakdowns or inconsistent care

  • Individuals needing multiple daily hours to stay on track, regulated, and safe

These are real individuals with meaningful lives — not just clinical cases. We treat them as such.

How We Build Support for Adults with Higher Needs

1. We Start with Listening

Building effective support begins with listening. We take the time needed to understand:

  • What’s worked for you and what hasn’t

  • Your daily rhythm and routine

  • Preferred communication styles

  • Triggers and warning signs, along with necessary safety plans

2. We Build a Consistent Team

You cannot rebuild trust when different strangers show up constantly. That's why we focus on:

  • Matching you with the right workers rather than the next available person

  • Offering longer shifts, consistent schedules, and minimal changes

  • Training workers via our internal platform, Sparks Academy, to ensure they are well-prepared

3. We Support Families Too

We recognize that caregivers often experience burnout without proper support. We prioritize open communication and respect your input. Our goal is to lighten the load on families as much as we can.

What We’re Not (and Why That’s a Good Thing)

Understanding who we are not can be just as important as knowing what we do.

We’re not a clinical service.

We’re not a crisis response team.

We’re not SIL (Supported Independent Living).

Instead, we are:

  • Calm, consistent, and adaptable

  • Trained in routines, boundaries, emotional regulation, and effective communication

  • Big enough to build a strong team yet small enough to care deeply

We emphasize realistic, sustainable, and safe support — avoiding overpromising or taking on cases beyond our capabilities.

Real Examples of Our Work

Here are some current examples of the support we provide:

  • A man struggling with PTSD and bipolar disorder receives 6-hour shifts daily to help manage routines and emotional regulation.

  • A woman with psychosocial disability lives independently while receiving support 7 days a week to maintain her tenancy and rebuild her confidence.

  • A client with dual diagnoses benefits from 2:1 support during community access to ensure safety and reduce potential incidents.

In each case, we collaborate closely with families, coordinators, and clients to build support that truly fits individual needs.

The Importance of Consistent Care

Having a stable care team can significantly improve the quality of life for those with complex needs. Consistency leads to trust, better communication, and effective emotional regulation.

When clients know they can rely on familiar faces, stress can be reduced. Support workers can observe changes and offer help promptly. This is why we focus on creating long-term relationships between clients and their support workers.

Final Thoughts

“Complex care” doesn’t solely refer to medical settings. Sometimes, it signifies support that is realistic, respectful, and responsive to everyday needs. If you or someone you support requires more than basic drop-ins but less than hospitalization, we might be the perfect team for you.
