One of our support workers accompanied a 16-year-old girl on a special end-of-year outing. With a diagnosis of Down syndrome, Autism (PDA profile) and anxiety, her goals include strengthening her independent living skills, building self-esteem and confidence, and participating in activities she loves, such as swimming, basketball, and bike riding.
Despite having a poor night’s sleep and waking up with a headache, she showed incredible self-regulation throughout the day. During a Christmas shopping trip and lunch outing, she faced a challenging moment in a store. After a brief emotional meltdown, she was able to calm herself by sitting quietly, then asked for a hug, and was ready to continue her day with confidence and balance.
She also showed great maturity in accepting that not all the items she wanted could be bought, a true demonstration of emotional growth and self-control. By the end of the day, she still had the energy to help decorate the house for Christmas, showing her creativity and festive spirit.
These everyday moments are truly meaningful, each small step towards independence, communication, and emotional wellbeing is celebrated with care and recognition.
At Sunshine Family Support, we believe respectful, individualised support is the key to helping every person thrive at their own pace. 🌈✨
